AND your conclusion is right on target. You do NOT want to completely adopt the
California system of education. Your idea of loosening up the German system a bit
is better.
The problem with higher learning in California is that there is entirely too much trivia
introduced into the classroom, required courses that I refer to generically as
"Advanced Basket Weaving" (and a bit ironic for me, as I would have loved to have
had a basket-weaving course among my arts programs! LOL!). There is way too
much nonsense in US universities (not just in California), so it would appear to me
that the true path is what you said... somewhere in the middle.
